Service Graphics completes 'largest PVC building banner in UK' for the Jubilee

Service Graphics was appointed by private real estate development firm, Deerbrook Group, to produce a building banner for its development at Sea Containers House, situated adjacent to Blackfriars Bridge.

Sea Containers House is a large 1970’s office building. An imposing 46m in height, it is a noticeable landmark on London’s South Bank. The building was purchased by the Deerbrook Group, who is redeveloping the site to reinvigorate the river walkway. The development will include nine stories of office space, along with shops and restaurants. The south wing and parts of the east and west wing will be developed by Morgan’s Hotel Group into a 4* Mondrian branded hotel with 360 rooms. The hotel scheduled to open in 2014, will be the first Mondrian hotel in Europe.

Service Graphics has produced the black back PVC banner to cover the riverside of the building, disguising the scaffold for the duration of the refurbishment. Due to its unprecedented size, the banner was printed in 42 separate sections using the companies Dhurst RHO 500 printer, housed at its Chessington super site.

The banner was then fabricated into 7 sections using high frequency welding to bond the PVC. The banner itself depicts the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, with Prince Charles, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew, Lord Mountbatten along with The Queen, Prince Phillip, Captain Mark Phillips and Princess Anne standing on the balcony at Buckingham Palace.  The job is - to date - the largest ever produced by Service Graphics and indeed the largest ever produced on PVC in the UK.

Aside from its size, the production challenge included time sensitive deadlines. The banner could not be printed until planning permission had been granted on 10th May, resulting in only 15 days to turn the project around from printing to finished installation. The installation itself posed further issues with the installation due to the size and weight of each section and the practicalities of getting the sections into position on the scaffolding at 12th floor level.

Scott King, sales director of Service Graphics says, “We are delighted to work with Deerbrook Group to produce such an extraordinary building banner. This project represents the largest ever single graphic produced by Service Graphics and we are extremely pleased with the result.”
