PostScript revolutionaries receive Ipex 2010 'Champions In Print' Award

Dr. John Warnock and Dr. Charles (Chuck) Geschke

Dr. John Warnock and Dr. Charles (Chuck) Geschke, the co-founders of Adobe Systems Incorporated, have been honoured with the global Ipex 2010 ‘Champions in Print’ awards which acknowledge the huge contribution of those who have influenced and shaped the development of the printing industry.

The Ipex Advisory Committee, which represents a broad range of major exhibitors, visitor groups and trade associations, has awarded the accolade in recognition of the roles they played in inventing Adobe® PostScript® technology which revolutionised desktop publishing by providing a radical new approach to printing text and images on paper.

John Warnock says, "We are delighted to accept the Ipex "Champions in Print" award. When Chuck and I founded Adobe in 1982, we hoped our technology would have the potential to make an important contribution to the communication of ideas. But if anyone had told us it would be part of revolutionizing the printing and publishing industry, we would have been sceptical. We were fortunate in that we have always hired bright and creative people at Adobe. I'm proud to say that Adobe has been built on the legacy that has continued to revolutionize how the world engages with ideas and information, whether in print, on the Web and across all manner of devices."

Chuck Geschke says, "We are honoured to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Adobe who has worked with us to advance the future of the print and publishing industry. The revolution that began as desktop publishing in the late 1980s changed the cost, productivity and efficiency of an industry without compromising the 500 years of the traditional aesthetics and quality of the printing trade. The technology and products developed at Adobe since its founding have had a major influence on the evolution of the graphics arts industry. Today, Adobe continues to drive the transformation of print communications from a manual, mechanical process to a fully digital workflow."

Geschke and Warnock met in the late 1970s at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre, where Geschke directed research activities in computer science, graphics, image processing and optics, and Warnock worked as a principal scientist. The pair went on to set up Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1982 and launched PostScript which enabled content from a computer file to be printed exactly as it appeared on screen, with all formatting, graphics and fonts intact.

Building on the success of PostScript technology, their company expanded into desktop publishing software with Adobe® Illustrator® and Adobe® Photoshop®. These applications enabled designers to create and manipulate complex images and graphics for print. Later on, the launch of Adobe® InDesign® redefined page layout for publications, allowing many magazines, newspapers and corporate brands to adopt modern production workflows. The development of Adobe® Acrobat® software, and the Portable Document Format (PDF), helped advance the print industry further by enabling the use of electronic files for high-fidelity printing.

Ipex 2010 Event Director, Trevor Crawford, says, “The sheer number of nominations that both Dr Geschke and Dr Warnock have received since the launch of the Champions in Print awards is testament to the impact they’ve had on our industry. Both had a vision for publishing and graphic arts which has forever changed how people create and engage with information. We’re extremely pleased to recognise their outstanding contribution to the graphic arts world and hope we’ll continue to attract large numbers of nominations for different industry figures.”

In addition to chairing Adobe Systems Incorporated, both men serve on the boards of the various educational, arts, technology and other non-profit organisations. Geschke serves on the boards of the San Francisco Symphony, the Commonwealth Club of California, as well as being a board trustee at the University of San Francisco and an advisory board member for computer science at Carnegie-Mellon University. Warnock is active on or has served on the boards of the Sundance Institute, the American Film Institute and the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose.

The Ipex 2010 ‘Champions in Print’ Awards were launched to honour individuals who have influenced and shaped the printing industry across the world. There will be ten ‘Champions’ in the run-up to Ipex 2010, which will take place from 18th - 25th May at the NEC, Birmingham, UK. The first three winners were Indigo founder and industry pioneer Benny Landa, J.K Rowling, author of the top-selling Harry Potter novels, and Professor Frank Romano at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

To nominate a living person for the next ‘Champions in Print’ award, complete a nomination form on-line by visiting www.ipex.org/cip. If a nominee hasn’t yet been selected as a winner, he or she can be nominated again. Entries must be supported by a brief summary of the nominee's achievements.

Océ and Zünd team up for productivity showcase

Zund G3

Océ and Zünd have teamed up to showcase award-winning technologies and products at open days in St Albans, Hertfordshire, on 15-17 September between 9.30am and 5pm.

Océ and Zünd UK Ltd, the UK distributor of Zünd digital flatbed cutters, will provide a series of practical demonstrations. Experts from the two companies will be showing display graphics printers and packaging printers how to streamline their workflow, save labour, reduce waste and increase productivity by combining the leading Océ digital printers and Zünd digital cutting technologies.

The world’s top-selling UV curable flatbed and roll-to-roll inkjet printer, the Océ Arizona® 350 GT, will be on show alongside the Océ CS9160 high quality eco-solvent roll-to-roll inkjet printer, for both media for outdoor and indoor use.

Another top attraction will be the Océ ColorWave600, which uses patented CrystalPoint™ technology, combining all the benefits of toner with the advantages of inkjet technology.

Zünd will show the latest G3 series and how its systems have evolved into full featured, production tools capable of cutting blank and pre-printed vinyl and other roll materials, as well as pre-printed sheets on flexible and rigid substrates. These can be tailored to meet specific requirements of almost any application.

Dominic Fahy, Océ UK’s Business Group Director, Display Graphics, said: “The market remains buoyant. In the world of display graphics the demand for productive direct to substrate printing systems is rapidly growing. Run lengths and delivery times are getting shorter and in almost every graphic production, finishing is now a bottleneck.

“At the demonstrations we will show display graphics printers and packaging companies how to streamline workflows, save labour costs while at the same time reducing waste and increasing productivity. It’s an event not to be missed!”

Ipex 2010 tour lands in Italy to kick start event preparations

IPEX 2010

The city of Milan will provide the backdrop for the next stop of Ipex’s global marketing tour on Wednesday, 23rd September when Ricoh Italia will host the seventh leg of the international roadshow, from 10:00 to 15:00.

Designed to help existing and potential exhibitors draw as many visitors as possible to their stands at the international Ipex 2010 exhibition, the event will reveal the variety of free marketing tools available for use in pre-show marketing campaigns. Attendees will also find out how they can take advantage of sponsorship opportunities to further raise their profile at the show.

They can also discover how to reduce the cost of participating at the Ipex exhibition with the ‘Recession Buster’, an initiative which includes a range of cost-saving packages from stand build, rigging, production waste handling and storage, to budget accommodation options.

The Ipex team will provide the latest update on planned visitor features, event initiatives and the Ipex 2010 global marketing campaign, as well as offer further information on travel and logistics.

Nick Craig Waller, Ipex 2010 Marketing Director, says: “It’s less than a year until Ipex opens its door to visitors from around the globe, so it’s important for companies to put their marketing plans together now and tell people about their presence at Ipex. The roadshow provides an ideal place to start because we can give them an overview of the event, pass on experience from previous Ipex exhibitions, and guide them through all the central resources available.”

In addition to help and advice from the Ipex team, journalists from leading Italian graphic arts publications will talk about the latest market trends and show how exhibitors can produce more effective information for trade journals. Representatives from the key Italian graphic arts associations will also be on hand to address any questions relating to the event.

As one of the top ten exhibitors at the upcoming Ipex exhibition, digital printing solutions provider, Ricoh, will provide an insight into how it is maximizing its exhibition activities to further interact with its customers. Graham Moore, Director Production Printing, Ricoh Europe PLC, says, “Ipex 2010 is the ideal platform for the Ricoh Group to prove its commitment to the production printing market and to demonstrate its focused solutions for corporate and commercial printers. It’s an important international event for us as we continue to expand our global presence in this market. As this will be our first time at Ipex, we’re extremely pleased to be so closely involved during the preparation stages and to be hosting this interactive and informative event at our offices in Milan. I’ve personally attended some of the previous events in France and Germany and know how valuable the roadshow is for confirmed and prospective exhibitors.”

Nick Craig Waller adds, “So far, we’ve held roadshows in Belgium, Germany, China, France, Japan and the UK, and the feedback has been extremely positive. I’ve no doubt that attendees in Italy will find this day just as invaluable in their preparations for Ipex 2010.”

FESPA revamps its website to incorporate key social networks

FESPA website

FESPA has enhanced it main website (www.fespa.com) to connect with a number of key social media networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, helping the organisation capitalise on the communication opportunities that the rapidly evolving social media landscape provides. The site’s overall layout has also been given a facelift, making its content clearer and more user-friendly.

This initiative builds on the dynamic growth of FESPA’s own Wide Network, the world’s only online community for wide format digital print professionals. An early adopter of social media, FESPA developed its dedicated micro-network to create an international online community of printers, print buyers, marketers, consumers, editors, designers and analysts within the wide format industry, to encourage communication within the sector. Having tested the medium through the Wide Network, which has over 1200 members to date, FESPA is keen to take further advantage of social networks to broaden its communication with stakeholders.

Marcus Timson, FESPA Sales & Marketing Director comments: “Social media sites are not just about socialising with friends. They are a great way to stay in touch with business contacts and promote awareness of our events, products and services in the marketplace.  For FESPA, a key aspect of social networks is the open dialogue it enables with our members and the wider print community. Not only does it allow us to regularly communicate the latest FESPA news and event information and conduct quick research, but we are also able to receive direct feedback, helping us tailor initiatives to effectively meet members’ needs. For example, we have a Twitter account where we can provide FESPA ‘followers’ with the latest news, and we pick up any ‘tweet’ on the site where ‘FESPA’ is mentioned.”

FESPA.com’s revamp comes shortly after the organisation’s successful digital wide format print exhibition, FESPA Digital 2009, which was based on the theme of ‘Revolution’.

Timson continues: “Ours is a dynamic and ‘revolutionary’ community. This can be seen in the innovative technologies regularly brought to market, as well as in the inventive business practices that companies are implementing, which are increasingly including the active use of social networks. It’s important for today’s print businesses to keep up with market trends and take advantage of the commercial and learning opportunities that the ongoing media revolution presents. At FESPA, for example, we have plans to run marketing events on Twitter and are looking into other initiatives to help us engage effectively with new audiences and vertical markets.”

FESPA’s website continues to provide visitors with the latest industry news, RSS feed capability and show-dedicated links and information. Videos featuring interviews and news from prominent industry figures and FESPA spokespeople can also be viewed on the site simply by clicking on the ‘FESPA TV’ section or the YouTube icon.
