  • Caldera to celebrate ‘customer experience’ at FESPA Caldera Workspace is a new combined web portal that takes the place of the existing Caldera Extranet, Usernet and Demonet portals.

    Caldera’s stand at this year’s FESPA Global Print Expo will be placing a sharp focus on what the company does to enhance customer experience. The French RIP software specialists will be at the Berlin exhibition between 15 and 18 May, showing a range of new and existing Caldera products on Stand 2.2 – C12.

  • ADAPT announced as exclusive UK reseller for new HP Latex R2000 Rigid Printer

    HP has announced that ADAPT (formerly Amari Digital Supplies and Graphic Printing Technologies) will be the exclusive UK reseller for its new HP Latex R2000 Rigid printer. Unveiled at FESPA 2018, the HP Latex R2000 is a true hybrid for flexible and rigid printing, accommodating materials up to 2.5-metres/98” wide and up to 5cm/2” thick.

    The newly formed ADAPT has significant expertise in marketing rigid printing consumables and fulfilling associated flat sheet applications. The company also has a long history implementing and supporting HP Latex printing solutions. This experience has been instrumental in their selection as the ideal exclusive partner for the new HP Latex R2000.

    ADAPT will create a dedicated HP Latex Rigid Printing Demo Centre in Manchester, which is scheduled to open in July of this year. This facility will offer customers the chance to see the technology in action and explore all the possibilities available to them.

A four-colour printer, using UltraChrome DS ink with high density HDK Black, the SC-F9200 features dual Epson’s PrecisionCore TFP printheads to ensure consistent and reliable results with superb colour and clarity.  Visitors to the stand will also see the desktop Epson SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-fabric printer in action producing a variety of T-towels, aprons, cushions and tote bags on-demand and in minutes.

    Epson works closely with textile designers and colleges around the world to explore the power of digital printing within the fashion and décor industries. For Heimtextil, the company has teamed up with four young European textile designers from its ‘Design for Living’ initiative to showcase the flexibility and potential of digital printing to create a variety of textile products.  The stand will feature a customised design from one of these student designers implemented across multiple fabrics and homeware products to showcase the considerable freedom and opportunity that Epson and Robustelli technology gives to designers and manufacturers.

  • Epson earns Oeko-Tex® Eco Passport Certification for safe & sustainable textile chemicals

    Epson’s inks and printers have received the International Oeko-Tex® Association's Eco Passport certification for safe and sustainable textile chemicals. The Oeko-Tex® Eco Passport is an internationally-recognised safety and environmental certification for manufacturers of textile processing chemicals and chemical compounds such as dyes, additives, inks, finishing agents and detergents.

    Before awarding the Eco Passport, Oeko-Tex conducts comprehensive tests for harmful substances in textiles and textile accessories based on a large range of criteria and safety standards.  

    The Oeko-Tex® Eco Passport provides end users and customers with certified assurance that Epson’s inkjet printers and inks have achieved high standards of environmental sustainability and are free of harmful substances. Epson’s certified Eco Passport ink products include the UltraChrome DS ink for the SC-F6000, SC-F6200, SC-F7000, SC-F7100, SC-F7200, and SC-F9200 series' of SureColor dye-sublimation transfer printers, as well as for UltraChrome DG ink and auxiliary fabric preparation products for the SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment printer.

  • Epson donates SureColor large format printer for Golden Ticket Prize Draw at The Print Show

    For the second year running Epson is donating a SureColor SC-T5200 large format printer as the star prize in The Print Show’s Golden Ticket Prize Draw which will take place during the event (11th – 13th October 2016, NEC, Birmingham). The 36-inch wide high-speed, four-colour inkjet printer will be presented to one lucky winner on the day of the draw.

    Epson has reported significant orders across its range of printers from companies visiting its booth at drupa.

    “We have had a very successful show,” says Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe. “This was Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. The stand was extremely busy with huge interest from visitors from around the globe and we are delighted with the high number of significant orders generated.”

    Interest in the new SureColor SC-S signage range of printers was so high that Epson has increased production in order to keep up with the surge in demand. The show launch of Epson’s new 44-inch SureColor SC-P10000 wide-format printer was a resounding success with sales of 10 machines, including one to Picto in France which will be installed alongside their three 64inch SC-P20000s already onsite.

    Exhibited at drupa, the SurePress L-6034VW digital label press attracted significant attention with orders from around Europe - the show press is being delivered to Print-ID in Germany and the first in the UK was sold to Superfast Labels. The SurePress L-4033AW press proved popular too with a number of global sales made, including the US and Dubai.

    Within the print shop zone, Epson showed how its desktop solutions could enable companies to offer a collaborative design-and-print service to produce a wide variety of personalised products on a vast range of substrates. The new ColorWorks C7500 label printer alongside the SC-F2000 direct-to-textile printer in particular, drew in the crowds by demonstrating the potential to build new business streams, without compromising on quality and at an affordable price.

    Signage and printing company Slam Signs has invested in a four-colour SureColor SC-S40600 large format printer. It is the company’s third SureColor - as it has owned an SC-S30600 since its launch in 2012 and purchased its eight-colour SC-S70600 in 2015.

    Based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Slam Signs provides a complete design and print service to a wide range of customers - from small start-ups to well-known nationwide companies - and has been in business since 2007. It produces a variety of products including vehicle graphics/digital wraps, shop facias and signage, window graphics, banners/roller banners, internal and external signage, POS and pop-up exhibition displays.

    Purchased from authorised Epson reseller Papergraphics, the SC-S40600 is one of three new 64-inch SureColor professional signage printers launched earlier this year. Its new design and production features combine to offer market-leading quality at the fastest possible speeds – up to 58.4sqm/hr - with precise repeatability and long-term durability.   • Epson to debut DJet 10000 imposed print system at drupa

    Epson will demonstrate the DJet 10000 double-sided printing system for the first time at drupa (31st May-10th June 2016 in Hall 5/Stand A01). The 44-inch width 10-colour system has been developed by Swiss firm Digital Information and features two Epson SureColor SC-P10000 printers. The system has been designed for the ultra-fast production of double-sided imposition proofs - in 4-up (B2) and 8-up (B1) formats - and the economical production of short-run items such as display graphics, personalised books, leaflets and brochures.

    The DJet 10000 links pairs of Epson SC-P10000 printers in sequence but offset by 180° so that each prints one side of the uncut roll. Designed with minimum mechanical parts for greatest reliability and ease of operation, the DJet system includes a paper buffer loop between the two printers. Custom-developed control software adds identification and positioning codes to each job. These are read by video cameras and processed by the control software to confirm the alignment for the ‘back’ side of the printed roll. The system continuously registers the position of the printed paper, ensuring high precision front-to-back registration. Printed jobs can then be cut and folded as required to present a virtually finished book or brochure with correct pagination, or used as finished print for double-sided display material and similar applications. The DJet control software also supports common and proprietary bitmap as well as Epson file formats from a variety of leading prepress workflows and rips. Both imposed page proofs and brochure production will be demonstrated at drupa.

    The new 44-inch Epson SC-P10000 printer model used in the DJet 10000 system is also launched at drupa. The SC-P10000 incorporates the Epson PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead to deliver high quality output at superfast print speeds using a new UltraChrome Pro 10-colour ink-set. The high-density Photo and Matte Black inks and four levels of black combine to provide a rich and extended tonal range, necessary for accurate proofing for offset and in finished print production. Ultimately this new printer is very easy to operate, highly reliable and produces colour-calibrated prints.

    “The DJet 10000 is a smart and versatile system which unites Epson print quality and performance with Digital Information’s engineering and imposition control,” says Marc Boehmer, Epson Europe. “It gives users the flexibility to produce accurately imposed, double-sided, multi-page proofs as well as the ability to produce a range of quality printed products with low overall cost of ownership and fast return on investment.”

    The RA Schools Premiums Interim Projects exhibition took place for the first time in the historic Sackler Wing of Galleries at the Royal Academy. The annual show provides a unique opportunity to view exciting new work by 17 emerging and international artists at the interim point of their postgraduate study at the UK’s longest established art school, the RA Schools. Many of the works on display were produced using Epson technology and media, which are all accessible onsite to the students within the Schools’ Epson-sponsored Digital Media Suite.

    Providing the Schools with state-of-the-art large format digital printing, AV projection technologies and specialist media, gives students the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of work incorporating a wide range of practices, from hand-made objects and wallpaper installations to paintings and trompe l’oeil, as well as film, woodcuts, photography, film and sound.

    The only free three-year postgraduate course in the UK, the RA Schools programme is tailor-made to the individual student, affording each artist the space and flexibility to develop work across a broad array of media. Epson has been an integral part of the Schools fabric for several years, offering support and guidance to the students and staff, and the freedom to experiment and engage with technologies to produce a diverse range of work.

    There was much evidence this year of the creative collaboration between students and Epson technologies, with all of the students having utilised the Epson Digital Media Suite at some point during their study.

    This was particularly evident in the works of five of the artists on show:

    • Jack Burton works with high-gloss colour photographic prints of complex still life, often constructed from sculptural collages of found objects, customized spaces and earlier produced photographic images, printed using an Epson large-format printer.
    • India Mackie produces large scale video installations using Epson HD projectors to create physical 4D experiences in high resolution.
    • Martin Gross creates prints that span centuries of print processes on their journey of production. He begins by making drawings that are scanned, these become rasterised translations that then become wood-cut stencils via laser cutting equipment and digital print. These manifest as large format digital wallpaper installations that can be customised to fill and match bespoke environments and additionally they can become smaller framed-sized editions that utilise both state-of-the-art Epson inkjet printing and traditional 18th century wood engraving.
    • Dimitri Gallitzine produces work across a broad range of media. For Premiums, he created and projected a ‘mockumentary’ film, using an Epson HD projector, in which he documented a journey where he attempted to become a professional Elvis impersonator.
    • Sebastian Jefford is a sculptor of idiosyncratic objects made from a combination of diverse materials that include nails, wood, Plasticine, drawing and printing. The material skins which surround them are printed with screen printed Plasticine from film positives produced on a large format Epson printer. Jefford triumphs by an almost miss-use of the technologies intended functions.

    Mark Hampson, Head of Fine Art Processes at the RA Schools, who along with his specialist team is responsible for facilitating the students creative ambitions in the RA workshops, says of this group of students: "Our students never cease to surprise me in their creativity and the manifestations of their uses and abuses of the technology and equipment we are able to offer them at the RA Schools. They constantly surprise with their use of the available resources and the ambition with which they can apply these in their Art. This year’s Premiums is an amazing example of the strength of our collaborative project with Epson. Without Epson's support and the sponsorship of equipment and its technical knowledge, many of these artworks would not have been conceivable.

    Epson offers us the means and conceptual virtuosity to think laterally about technology and the implications and effects of our digital age. They do this with wonderful generosity and complete trust, often knowing that the resulting artistic consequences may be bizarre, unexpected, un-commercial but always exciting. I cannot think of a more positive way for industry and art education to collaborate and support each other."

    Unlike some of its competitors, when you buy Epson what you get is Epson. From the robots that assemble them to the individual components from which they’re made, everything in an Epson printer is of Epson design and manufacture, that was the message made loud and clear at the launch of the latest generation of Epson’s 64-inch wide format printers.

    At the prestigious Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One factory, an exclusive group of journalists were treated to the first viewing of the new SureColor SC-S series, each printer designed to offer users a precise and accurate way to create high impact, durable and profitable signage and display graphics. Easy to use and simple to maintain the new range gives print service providers a choice of printers to suit their specific production needs from 4-10 colours (including white and metallic) and up to 95.3sqm/hr single-pass productivity:

    SureColor SC-S80600, the top-of-the-range model features dual PrecisionCore TFP (thin film piezo) printheads and 9/10 colours including CMYKLcLmLk + red and orange, and can also be configured to use white or metallic silver.     The new SureColor SC-S range uses Epson’s new formulation quick drying and low odour UltraChrome GS3 inkset. As well as a substantial reduction in ink price for the new printers, Epson has improved the ink chemistry meaning significantly lower ink consumption resulting in a big improvement in total cost of ownership compared to other printer options on the market.

    The new printers allow users to produce a wider colour gamut than ever for highly accurate and repeatable colour reproduction. The top-of-the-range SC-S80600 also benefits from the addition of light cyan & light magenta, red, orange, white or metallic silver inks to expand the colour gamut and push application possibilities even further, making it ideal for operators who require accurate brand spot colours. The new SureColor SC-S range is energy efficient and delivers fast drying graphics with high abrasion resistance and prints that are durable outdoors for up to three-years without lamination.

    The products come with a two-year warranty and extended warranty options are available. Users can also take advantage of the Epson SureColor Academy for training, useful tips and tricks, plus ongoing support and access to a wide range of regularly-updated media profiles.

    In the UK and Ireland, the SureColor SC-S printers are supplied with an Onyx RIP as standard and are compatible with a wide range of other RIPs.

    PhotoBox has invested in five new-generation Epson SureColor SC-S60600 64-inch wide-format printers. The company has installed these alongside its existing fleet of 16 SureColor SC-S50600 printers in its UK factory to meet the ongoing growing demand for personalised photo canvases.

    PhotoBox is Europe’s leading B2C personalised photo based printing company which puts its considerable success down to inspiration supported by the right combination of product, service, marketing and innovative technology.

    Launched in 2000, today the PhotoBox Group encompasses seven brands – PhotoBox, Moonpig, Hofmann, PaperShaker, Sticky9, posterjack and PosterXXL – and employs about 1,000 people worldwide. Its five factories around the world turn digital photos into over 600 different personalised products - including photo canvases - for 30 million members across 20 countries.

    James Lawrence-Jones, Group Technical Innovation Director at PhotoBox, is responsible for product and production processes. “Since 2013 demand for photo canvases has grown by 70% year on year and we have expanded our production facilities to keep pace and deliver the very best quality and service to our customers,” says James. “We wanted an ink-efficient printer that would deliver great quality at higher speeds and with maximum reliability and the new SC-S60600 ticks all the boxes. Our manufacturing challenges are unusual because we have to be able to print, finish and despatch a large number of canvases on a day, over 12,000 individual canvases a day 24/7 at Christmas for example, and we have to rely on the very best production equipment to meet our high quality standards and tight deadlines.”  

    The new, robust SureColor SC-S60600 roll-to-roll printer has been designed to meet the needs of demanding production environments where maximum quality and reliability are key.  It uses Epson PrecisionCore permanent printheads in a dual CMYK configuration to deliver outstanding 1440 x 1440 dpi resolution and speeds up to 95.3sqm/hr (single pass) and 52.3sqm/hr (typical banner applications). The sophisticated media feeding system incorporates highly-advanced auto-tension control and wide-diameter pressure rollers to optimise grip and feed accuracy.  As a result, operators can load a 45kg roll of media and leave it to print unattended with the confidence that the end result will be perfect.

    Very quickly after installation of the new printers, James and his production team were experiencing the benefits. “The SC-S60600 delivers improved print quality at reduced pass rates and offers improved ink efficiency which, when combined with the almost 20% boost in print speeds, results in lower overall production costs,” he says. “The new automated maintenance feature is another benefit,” says James. “It maximises printer uptime and frees up our operators to focus on other tasks to keep the print room running at peak efficiency. Plus, the new improved media loading means accurate media set up is easier and quicker - which allows for long run, unattended printing with the confidence that quality will be consistent across all the images.”

    Canvas printing at PhotoBox is a highly streamlined operation. Customers have a choice of three canvas grades, 17 different sizes up to 30 x 40 inch, and rectangular, square and panoramic formats. Images received online on any of the 18 localised websites are automatically nested prior to printing in full-roll batches on a SureColor printer. The rolls are then loaded onto an Esko Kongsberg cutting table, automatically cut to size and finished. The complete process – from order receipt to despatch – typically takes less than 24 hours!

    “The SureColor printers are excellent and we work them hard around the clock producing stunning images for our customers. It’s a high stress environment and we need maximum production uptime so when we need it we have great support from Epson and Rockwell, Epson’s appointed service provider,” says James.

    Several staff members have also attended the Epson SureColor Academy to ensure they get the best from their printers. “Quality is key for production whatever the time of year so we train our production staff all year round to ensure we’re ‘match fit’ ahead of peak. Our operators have gained a better understanding and expertise in getting the very best results from the SureColors,” says James.

    A stunning piece of contemporary art installed on the west wall of St Michael’s Church, Camden, ‘HS’, has won the ACE Award for Art in a Religious Context. Designed and created by artist Maciej Urbanek, the large-scale artwork measures more than 60 sqm and was printed using an Epson large format printer and media.

    The ACE Awards were set up in 2003 to draw attention to standards in religious art and design and celebrate the successes and diversity of architectural and artistic projects in religious buildings throughout Britain. The winners of the 2015 Awards were announced at a reception held in the remarkable setting of King’s College Chapel, London.

    A graduate of Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy of Arts, Maciej is currently Photography Tutor at the Royal Academy Schools, while still developing his art practice producing large-scale printed works. He was introduced to Epson within the RA Schools’ Epson Digital Media Suite and has used Epson materials and equipment since he was a student so knows the technology well.

    “Epson were very generous in offering me the use of their print facility at Hemel Hempstead in order to produce the 27 pieces that make up the installation,” says Maciej. “Not only did they provide their facilities but also their expertise. It simply wouldn’t have been possible without their help and support.”

    The large scale photographic work impressed judges with its ‘drama and theology’ and its ability to ‘speak mysteriously and powerfully’. Maciej says: “I’m delighted with the finished piece and the fact that it has created a focal point for the whole community to enjoy. I’m also very happy it has won the ACE Award!”

  • Colourgen announces positive financial year with 20% growth

    Colourgen has announced positive, profitable results for its financial year ending June 2015. Revenues increased overall by 20%, with all brands represented by Colourgen benefiting from the growth.

    Jeff Biggs, Managing Director of Colourgen, comments: "Our results last year were very pleasing during what was for many a difficult trading year. We have adapted ourselves well to the market and we are using our resources efficiently and productively to ensure we maintain the high levels of customer service, satisfaction and loyalty that has always been our trademark."

    Highlights from Colourgen's 2014/15 fiscal year include a growth in its Epson business which saw nearly a 50% increase in printer sales. "The growth in Epson business is particularly good news for us and is a result of the quality of our technical and logistics capabilities. We will continue to invest in this area to ensure further growth in Epson business," adds Biggs.

    Mutoh sales remained steady with a slight increase in the number of printers sold compared to the previous year.

    However, laminator sales have shown the most dramatic rise, with Colourgen increasing sales of Kala and Seal products by 124%. Biggs, "We believe this growth in laminator sales is a result of post-recession purchases with very outdated equipment finally being replaced. There is also a lot of confidence within the market for both the Kala and Seal brands."

    Specialist products like the Windo Display range from FloorWindo also showed growth, up 31% on last year. Overall, consumables business grew by 15%.

    Jeff Biggs concludes: "Our results reflect the fact that we are now seeing more movement as the market recovers, which is demonstrated in increased capital investments. The market remains difficult though and we will continue to add value, especially in logistics and technical. We are also focused on finding new opportunities and products to address emerging markets."

  • Carton Edge wins Epson SureColor SC-T5200 large format printer at The Print Show 2015

    The Print Show 2015 visitor Emma Tomlinson from trade carton finishing company Carton Edge Ltd, was in for a pleasant surprise when she heard she had won the Golden Ticket Prize Draw. As she made her way over to the Epson/Colourbyte stand, she discovered her prize was a 36-inch Epson SureColor SC-T5200 large format printer worth £2,500!

    “I’d spent a great day at the show and was in my car about to leave when I got the call to say my name had been announced over the tannoy, so I dashed back to find out what I’d won,” says Emma. “I was completely shocked when I saw that I’d won the Epson printer!”

    Emma has just taken delivery of the SureColor SC-T5200 printer: “It’s just like receiving an early Christmas present. I can’t wait to start using it!”

    Once installed, the printer will be used to print Carton Edge’s POS, marketing posters and collateral. Emma says: “Carton Edge is exhibiting at Packaging Innovations at the NEC in February, so it will be the ideal opportunity to design and print our own POS and graphics for the stand using the SureColor SC-T5200.”

    With support from Colourbyte and Epson, Emma is hoping to get creative and find new ways to use the printer: “We want to get the most out of the printer so will be looking at how we can use it for printing onto a wide range of media - not just on paper. It’s very exciting! This could open up new opportunities and expand the business in a way we never imagined.”

  • Antalis enters 3D print market following reseller agreement with ArtSystems

    Antalis has entered the 3D printing market following the completion of a reseller agreement with ArtSystems. The agreement establishes Antalis as a MakerBot Professional Plus Reseller and Stratasys Idea Series authorised partner of 3D printers that use Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) technology. In addition, Antalis will also offer expert advice and model sampling for customers who are thinking of venturing into the 3D print market.

    Commenting on the announcement, Paul Duffy, Antalis Digital Print Development Manager says: “The 3D print market is growing at an unprecedented rate. As our customers become more aware of this burgeoning new technology, they are looking for guidance as to how this could fit within their own businesses. We therefore wanted to use our relationships in key markets to develop a 3D print offering that would fulfill the majority of those customer’s demands, from entry level to more professional applications.”

    The MakerBot range is aimed at the education market and the ‘prosumer’ starting out on the 3D journey, with 4 models ranging from a £1,000 to £5,000 to offer differing build volumes. Easy to install and use, the ‘MakerBot Desktop’ software gives the user instant access to printer functionality, training videos, tips and tricks, technical support and access to over a 1,000,000 free customisable models.

    The Stratasys Idea Range is aimed at the 3D professional wanting to create highly accurate prototypes and concept proofs with printers costing £6,500 to £14,500. The quality of print on these devices means complex, working, one-piece models can be created and the water soluble support filament means post print fishing is kept to a minimum.

    The Stratasys and MakerBot range enable Antalis to offer printers at all price points depending on the customer’s specific requirements.

    Duffy continues: “Although 3D print may be too soon for some of our customers, they will be able to learn from us, and start to think about the opportunities that this technology offers.”

    According to Duffy, 3D printing is of interest to educators, designers, engineers, marketers and printers who will find familiarity with the 3D process based on their workflow experience in taking digital files through to print. Therefore 3D printing is a natural fit for those companies looking to introduce cutting edge technology to their range of print services.

    Producing highly complex signage jobs depends on more than just advanced printing hardware. As complexity rises, so too does the importance of advanced software.

    Richard Gardner, Chairman of Gardners, one of the world's largest digital printing companies, knows this better than most and he has spent years working with leading technology companies to build the best hardware and software platform for his growing business.

    Founded in 1976 primarily as a screen printer, Gardners is now a totally digital operation serving many different industries and applications. A significant part of Gardners' work is printed on HP large format digital printers - an impressive lineup that now numbers 24 HP printers based on HP Latex Inks and UV-curable, aqueous, and lowsolvent/ solvent inks.

    VDP that does more than variable printing

    As a printing innovator, Gardners recognised that variable data printing (VDP), which has been widely used in small-format printing for some years, could also bring value to wide-format printing. The company initially developed its own VDP software for a few specific printers. Then, Gardners adopted the HP SmartStream Designer solution for VDP, enabling it to expand its VDP capabilities.

    "The proposition is to use VDP not just on jobs that have changing images, but also on other things that might be only internal, says Gardner. "For instance, we use it to print files in collated order for easy packing for different branches, which is essentially 'print to pack'.

    Variably printed signage arrives in perfect order

    Recently, Gardners was asked by De Wild, a Dutch printing company, to produce a full set of store signage for Gamma, a major DIY franchise chain in the Netherlands. De Wild provides Gamma with complete in-store signage, including textile and other banners, point of sale displays, and more. Given the requirement to produce 750 different versions for 147 store locations - a huge job totaling approximately 63,000 different signs - Richard Gardner knew that the logistical challenges would have to be solved by software. The obvious solution: HP SmartStream Designer.

    Gardners set up the job as 63,000 individual panels so that each panel was printed with a tiny code indicating exactly to which region, which store and which aisle each sign would go. Going beyond "print to pack", it was a perfect example of "print to pack to place".

    "It was exceptionally complicated because we had to prepare an enormous amount of information to go into huge spreadsheets," recalls Gardner. "But, once it got to HP SmartStream Designer, it became relatively straightforward."

    De Wild sales accountant Marianne Harmsen, who worked closely with Gardners to be sure everything went perfectly for De Wild's customer, says: "It sure made our life easier. At first we were a bit concerned about getting every sign in the right order in the right boxes. Then Gardners told us about the HP system and it became clear that they could put it in the right order, so there was no worry for us anymore. In the end, it was all printed in a few weeks, and there were no issues. It went very well."

    Time savings across the board

    Virtually every department of Gardners benefitted from using HP's VDP solution for this massive job - as did the end customer. Studio time was reduced by an estimated 70 percent; the finishing department gained by having all pieces automatically produced in the right order; the packing department saved time and complication because all pieces were numbered in sequence, eliminating the need to search for panels or boxes.

    Ultimately, the end customer gained by reducing the time need to fit out an entire store with the new signage by an estimated 75 percent compared with previous store refits.

    The Gamma signage project has brought benefits to Gardners far beyond the single huge order, as Gardners will be able to apply the same business and production model to other customers.

    HP printer vital to business win

    For the actual production, Gardners depended on its two HP Scitex FB7500 Printers. The two digital flatbed printers ran around the clock for approximately a month producing the approximately 1,32 x 0,55 m (4.32 x 1.8 ft) panels on 2mm (0.08 in) Foamex.

    "I believe that without these two semi-automatic machines, we would not have been able to do the job," says Gardner. "We provided samples and our print quality was accepted above everybody else's."

    Making digital printing a one-time sell Gardner is certain that the combination of VDP with high-productivity digital printing is only going to become more important. "We are competing with screen, offset, and other analogue processes. So if we can say to a customer: 'You can personalise every banner or every outdoor graphic or every point of sale.' That's a huge sell against analogue. And we've found that whenever a customer has come from analogue to digital, they never go back. It's a one-time sell; they get used to the production and to the variable data possibilities, and they enjoy it."
