Neschen celebrates 125 years with Open Day

On September 12, 2014 Neschen AG celebrated its 125 anniversary with an open day. During the day, hundreds of visitors took the opportunity to find out about the largest local employer and in the evening, employees, customers, suppliers and partners came together in the festively decorated production hall.

"It was a great day and we are happy that we could spend it with our employees worldwide, customers, partners and the people from this area," said a delighted Lars Woltermann, Head of Corporate Marketing. It was a market of possibilities with ample varieties and whoever wanted could roll headlong in a huge transparent plastic ball on the Neschen parking lot. Whole school classes brought their books which the Neschen book specialists covered with protection film filmolux - after all for decades Neschen has been the leading supplier of protection and repair films for books for libraries and archives.

One of the highlights was the state-of the art gudy Roller.dot, a dot adhesive used for many applications. In the showroom as well as in the crafts corners at the market of possibilities the roller was well used and tested. But even the day before the dispenser was used a lot at the spots where stickers, signs etc. were applied that had to be removed afterwards without leaving any residue.

In close contact with innovations

During several guided tours the visitors could convince themselves of the modern production of the Neschen materials. The first stop of the plant tour was the materials storage where raw materials and semi-finished products are stored at more than 2,500 storage locations. More than 2,000 finished products are readily available as rolls in order to guarantee a high delivery capability. Then the visitors stopped at the 'powerhouse of ideas' i.e. the development department and the laboratory, where innovative coatings and adhesives are created. The finished formulations are mixed together. Depending on the production lot size the weight of adhesive mixtures ranges from a few kilograms to several tons.

Afterwards at the coating system a staff member explained how the finished adhesive is applied to the carrier material. The liquid adhesive flows through pipes to the machine and is then applied to the carrier layer by means of appropriate coating heads. Up to 200 metres of film pass through the system in one minute. In three shifts more than one hundred thousand metres of material can be coated per day and assembled to manufactured products. Finally the visitors arrived at the new showroom where they were shown examples of advertising banners, display systems, digital print films for XXL-prints, digital wallpaper, films to protect and repair books, technical coatings and much more made with materials manufactured by Neschen - a real paradise for advertising engineers, interior designers and creative people from all over the world.

In the evening 250 guests celebrated the official 125-year-anniversary.

First, the speaker of the Management Board, Henrik Felbier, welcomed the guests. Employees from all branches and subsidiaries came to the event. Neschen is represented in more than 60 countries with its own branches and via dealers and partners. The manager outlined the history of Neschen beginning at the plaster production for the royal court up to 1960s with the development of filmolux, the Bückeburg book-skin and up to the present. He also pointed out the ups and downs and changes Neschen had to cope with during the past 125 years and that the company always succeeded in taking the right course due to the constant innovative strength. Neschen's history was marked by numerous innovative products, but the company in Bückeburg has always stuck to adhesives.

One of the highlights at the gala event was surely the ceremonial presentation of the NESCHEN chronicle. The NESCHEN chronicler, Vanessa Erstmann, prepared this chronicle after an intensive research work on the occasion of the 125-year-anniversary.

Agfa Graphics wins two Gold Ink Awards

Agfa Graphics has been honoured with two Gold Ink Awards from Printing Impressions magazine. The Gold Ink Awards are considered the industry’s most prestigious print competition. The Azura video card won a gold award in the “Direct Mail” category and the Agfa Graphics 2014 VIP Calendar won a silver award in the “Calendar” category.

The video card was developed to promote Azura, the company’s global leading chemistry-free printing plate. The creative strategy was to showcase the product in a piece that integrates print and video technologies. When the video card is opened, an embedded screen starts playing an educational video about Azura plates. It was created using several Agfa Graphics technologies including Apogee workflow, Sublima screening, and processed through an Avalon N8 platesetter on Energy Elite Pro plates. Designed by Rudy Van Hoey of MathildeStudios, Belgium, the gold award-winning Azura video card was printed by Artoos, one of Agfa Graphics Partners in Development, also of Belgium.

The Agfa Graphics 2014 VIP Calendar won a Gold Ink silver award. The 2014 VIP Calendar is a testimony to the “power of print” and was based on the theme “Connect/Create/Care”. A joint effort of the Agfa Graphics community, the VIP Calendar showcased the thirteen best images submitted by employees during a photo contest. It was created using several of Agfa Graphics’ technologies and materials, including Energy Elite Pro digital thermal printing plates, the Avalon platesetter with Apogee workflow software and Sublima screening technology. Specific offset printing techniques gave the calendar the additional flavor that make it a product demonstrating ’the power of print’. Rudy Van Hoey of MathildeStudios, Belgium, created the 2014 VIP Calendar. It was printed by Guido Maes Printingdeluxe, also of Belgium.

“It is an honour to be recognised for the creative visual achievements represented by our Azura video card and 2014 VIP Calendar,” said Deborah Hutcheson, Director of Marketing, Agfa Graphics North America. “To be chosen from among 1,000 entries is a testament to the passion that runs deep within our organisation.”

This year’s Gold Ink Award winning pieces surpassed their competitors based on print quality, technical difficulty and overall visual effect. A panel of distinguished graphic arts professionals judged entries over the course of four days. Winners will be honored at the annual Gold Ink Awards & Hall of Fame Gala held on Monday evening, Sept. 29, at the Hyatt Regency at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Escalators transformed with Paperlinx 25mm Clear Altuglas Acrylic

When Hull, UK-based Ino-Plaz was commissioned to design and manufacture panels to create a water feature that would be the focal point of Ilford's main shopping centre's escalators, the company identified that the best material to use would be Paperlinx 25mm Clear Altuglas Acrylic.

The colourful waterfall design at 'The Exchange' creates a wave-like movement in between the escalators and was achieved through a direct print to the back of the 25mm Clear Altuglas Acrylic.  This was then edge-lit using LED lighting fitted into the lighting box produced by architectural lighting specialist Kemps.

Operations Manager Tim Loft said: “The constant light transmission properties of Paperlinx Altuglas products ensured that we delivered this project to the highest standards and met the requirements of the lighting specialists and the end-user.

“The Paperlinx Clear Altuglas Acrylic is a durable substrate with excellent constant sheet thickness.  It is also easy to handle, it’s half the weight of glass; easy to clean and abrasion resistant.”

Nazdar offers ink reseller ND Graphics a ‘phenomenal’ opportunity

ND Graphics Building

Since 1981, Canada-based ND Graphics has grown from a small family business into the country’s leading supplier of graphics materials, equipment and software to the sign and imaging markets. With a workforce of more than 100 people, ND Graphics serves the signmaking, digital printing, screen-printing, tradeshow, POP and commercial printing industries. The company has 10 warehouses across Canada and keeps more than 4,000 products in stock; included within these products is Nazdar’s high quality, alternative ink range for digital printers.

The company has sold Nazdar inks for several years under its own-label InkBrite brand. However, in May this year ND Graphics came to an agreement with Nazdar to assume exclusive distribution of Nazdar digital inks in Canada and since that time has marketed the inks under the Nazdar brand.

ND Graphics now distributes Nazdar’s high quality alternative range of wide format digital printer ink cartridges for Roland DG machines. Significantly less expensive than the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) ink, Nazdar’s product range provides the exact same colour gamut and print performance. The Nazdar ink cartridges are also plug and play when converting from OEM inks, with no need for the time-consuming task of reprofiling printers.

All Nazdar products are stringently tested internally and via beta sites prior to release, and come with one of the best warranties in the business. The warranty is incredibly robust and covers the entire ink train should Nazdar inks be proven to have damaged an approved/compatible printer.

Working with Nazdar has been a very positive experience for ND Graphics. Mark West, President of ND Graphics, says, “Nazdar is an easy company to work with. The support provided to us is excellent – the people at Nazdar really will work to help us and our customers in any way they can.”

ND Graphics is currently rolling out Nazdar’s ‘free ink’ campaign across Canada, where it has a customer base of more than 10,000 businesses. The free ink campaign offers customers the chance to trial a cartridge of ink completely free of charge and applies to OEM customers currently using Roland DG OEM wide format printer cartridge inks.

In order to apply for a free Nazdar ink cartridge, interested parties simply visit http://www.nazdar.com/FreeCartridge.asp, fill in the online form and await delivery. Users in Canada can also expect a follow up call from an ND Graphics representative to ensure that the Nazdar replacement inks meet with their expectations.

Changing from OEM to Nazdar inks is very straightforward and involves simply swapping out the OEM cartridges with Nazdar ink as they run out. No profile changes are required as Nazdar wide format inks are an exact colour and performance match to the OEM inks.

On the campaign, Martin Burns, Digital Market Segment Manager at Nazdar, says, “We recognise that the switch from OEM to alternative inks can be daunting for some companies and this is our way of encouraging them to take the first step. The campaign enables current OEM ink users to trial our inks and substantiate our claims without incurring any cost whatsoever. We are confident that Nazdar inks will exceed ND Graphics’ customers’ expectations.”

Mark West adds, “The free ink campaign offers us a great opportunity to convert Roland DG printer customers to Nazdar ink. It is well documented that massive savings can be made when moving from OEM to alternative ink solutions. However, there are natural concerns about making the change and the ‘free ink’ campaign enables us to offer our customers a completely risk-free conversion route. Nazdar addresses the concerns of customers with its robust warranty and enables them to trial its quality products for free. As a reseller, the free ink campaign offers us a phenomenal opportunity to target the Canadian market – it’s a win-win situation for all involved.”
